Graduation

Filed under: Cohort, Science Classes — mis300_02 @ 3:17 am

I’m just a bit worried because I have a ton of classes to take, including science, business and spanish ones. I still am planning on graduating in 4 years. But, I’m not sure how this classes business is going to work out. I don’t want a heavy load next semester because I will be taking my MCATs. I have set up appointments with my advisors, so hopefully they can help me out!

Marketing

Marketing has been one long and tedious class this entire semester. Our final test is tomorrow and I can’t wait! Hopefully everything goes well because I have to get close to a 100% in order to get an A. I’ve tried my best and I’ll leave the rest up to whatever I have studied.

Studying for Finance

So on this next finance exam, which is apparently on Thursday, I definitely have to study. I thought I would not have to take the final, but that isn’t the case anymore! I actually need to get a pretty decent grade on this 3rd exam and take the final. I wish I could have got myself to study more for the second exam and that way, I wouldn’t have had to take the final.

New Technology Replacing Mammograms

A new CT scan could rule out the need for the painful mammograms that women have to get. The CT scan of the breast produces 3D pictures that can show doctors whether the “lump” is a benign lesion or a malignant tumor. This scan would rule out the pain that is involved in getting a mammogram. The scan also provides a view of the tissue around the outer breast, where approximately 50% of cancers are found.

Dr. O’Connell, director of women’s imaging and head of this study, stated that one lesion was clearly seen through the CT scan whereas in the mammogram, it was hard to detect.

This is great news for women as they won’t have to suffer through the pains of the mammogram!

Breast Cancer

I read an interesting article on CNN Health that discussed how young adults who are obese have a lower risk of breast cancer before menopause. This is compared to other young adults who are the same age and have a normal weight. However, after menopause, they have an increased risk of breast cancer because of their obesity. This is very contradictory and has some interesting implications.

These researchers do not want to promote the message that obesity is okay. One reason they speculate for the lower risk before menopause is that these women do not ovulate as much due to their large body size. This disruption lowers certain hormone levels. This is one explanation for the decrease risk in breast cancer in obese women. However, after further research, the researchers ruled out this possibility.

Currently, they are in the process of finding out the mechanism as to why obese women are less likely to get breast cancer before menopause.

Back to Tucson

Filed under: Cohort, Weekend Activities — mis300_02 @ 1:46 pm

Today’s the last day of Thanksgiving Break. It’s time to go back to Tucson…which means it’s time to start studying. I brought all my books up from Tucson because I thought I’d be able to get some work done. But, that definitely did not happen! Instead, I caught up on many hours of lost sleep and ate a lot of food!

Grey’s

The last episode of Grey’s Anatomy was pretty intense. I was upset that I couldn’t see it on Thursday because we had to go to my parents’ friend’s house for dinner. Usually they play a repeat episode on Friday…but too bad Shrek 2 was coming on. My last resort was to watch the episode on ABC.com. So I definitely did that! Watching it on half a laptop screen is better than not watching it at all.

More Shopping

Yesterday, my family and I almost spent 6 hours trying to find the perfect couch for our living room. It was so much craziness. Fortunately most of the croud had died down after the morning rush. So, shopping wasn’t too bad. We ended up finding a couch at a really reasonable price!

Today…I continued the shopping that I couldn’t finish yesterday. It was pretty fun because some of the deals were still there. For now, I think I am all shopped out.

Shopping

It’s Black Friday today and I’m really excited to go shopping! There is no way that I could get up and go at 5 or 6 in the morning. Not only is it super early but everyone else is there and waiting in lines. I think I’ll wait a bit…I’d rather sleep a little more and pay a few extra bucks. I will probably end up going to the mall later because I can’t keep away!

Thanksgiving Dinner

Thanksgiving was amazing yesterday! I began my day after sleeping for 15 hours. I think I caught up on sleep for the past week or so. For the actual dinner, my family and I went over to one of my parents’ friend’s house. This was a lot of fun because all of my friends from elementary school also came. We ate a ton of food and I caught up with my friends!
